However, Van Ark’s journey to stardom was far from simple, marked by humble beginnings, unwavering determination, and a passion for her craft that never wavered.

Born in New York City, Van Ark’s family relocated to Boulder, Colorado, when she was just a child. It was in this picturesque mountain town that her love for acting first blossomed. Despite facing early setbacks, such as being passed over for the prom, Van Ark remained steadfast in her pursuit of a career in show business. With the unwavering support of her parents, who encouraged her dreams, she embarked on a path that would eventually lead her to the prestigious Yale Theatre School, where she became the second woman and youngest student ever to receive a scholarship.

Van Ark’s early career was marked by a series of breakout roles, including her Broadway debut in The School for Wives, for which she earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play. As she continued to hone her craft, Van Ark’s perseverance paid off when she landed the role of Valene Ewing on the hit television series Dallas in 1978. This iconic character would go on to become her most famous and enduring, as she reprised the role on the spinoff series Knots Landing for an impressive 327 episodes.

Valene Ewing was a complex and multifaceted character, and Van Ark’s portrayal of her was nothing short of captivating. Her ability to seamlessly navigate the emotional depths of the character, from her triumphs to her struggles, resonated with viewers and cemented her status as a primetime icon. The Knots Landing spinoff, which debuted years before the Ewings made their television debut, quickly became a hit in its own right, with Van Ark’s Valene at the heart of the show’s success.
