It was said that shortly after losing his sweetheart, Brian’s mental stability declined. Because of this, it was imperative that he be placed under conservatorship immediately, since he was unable to care for himself. Hard is a trustee of Brian’s estate and is not bound by the guardians’ control.
Brian’s unstable mental state
Because of his early battles with mental illness, Brian became a more creative but quiet member of the Beach Boys. His unique talent, however, would not let him stay hidden for long. He was mistreated medically by his longtime doctor, Eugene Landy, who purposely overmedicated him for years. He also turned to drugs, alcohol, and overindulgence in food, which led to the development of schizoaffective disorder in his early years.
Brian revealed that he used to hear voices criticizing him nonstop in a 2006 interview with Ability. But in the end, he was able to locate a psychologist who helped him heal and gave him easy access to cease taking drugs. A big part of his recovery was also Melinda’s guarantee that he was secure and getting good medical treatment.
