Alpha Beta, the grocery store chain with the smiling cowboy mascot Alfie, has always had a special place in my heart. I can still hear their jingle in my head! It’s a bittersweet feeling knowing that the Alpha Beta name disappeared after merging with Ralph’s in 1994.
Then there was Jitney Jungle, born from a newspaper typo that turned “Jitney Jingle” into “Jitney Jungle.” It’s amazing to think that they were once the largest privately held grocery store chain in the US! Of course, we must remember Bruno’s, with its Food World discount stores, or the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, which was America’s largest grocer in its heyday.
It’s incredible how many grocery store chains have come and gone over the years. And while it’s sad to see these once-beloved stores disappear, it’s also nice to remember the good times we had shopping at them.
If you’re feeling as nostalgic as I am, then you’ll definitely want to check out this video about forgotten grocery stores from the past.
