Maureen McCormick opens up about journey from addiction to recovery

In spite of her fame from the show, she experienced the most personal setbacks in the years after The Brady Bunch’s conclusion. McCormick’s struggles with drug abuse, manic episodes, and bulimia hurt her acting career.

“I’ve been through a lot of hard times, but I take all those experiences and learn and grow from them,” she said in an interview with People in 2016.

“I received treatment in a psychiatric hospital, entered and exited rehab, and prayed to God for guidance.”

While battling a cocaine addiction and attempting to come to terms with the fact that her dream acting career was not working out, the former child star met a man at a performance who she knew would become her husband.

In his autobiography, Here’s the Story, McCormick states: “Turning around, I saw this guy behind me,” she said in Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My True Voice.

“In my entire life, I had never seen him. I looked at his gorgeous dark hair, chiseled face, and amazing form and thought, this is the man I’m going to marry.

McCormick joined Cummings at their Bible study once he started working. At church, she also took a seat beside him. The former Brady wanted to know everything there was to know about Cummings.

And it was a triumph! After spending more time together, they eventually embarked on their first date, and the rest is history.

“She was incredibly honest with me right away. She has always been honest and forthright with me. Additionally, in 2015, Cummings stated to Daily Mail, “I never worried about her going back to her old behavior because I figured we would just deal with whatever comes up.”

Things weren’t always simple, despite McCormick characterizing their courtship as “quick and passionate.”

Cummings was pushed away by McCormick on a regular basis while she battled her drug addiction and recovery. But he never did go.

“Michael said that he’d made a life-long commitment and decided he was going to work at it until it’s unworkable,” the author wrote in her 2008 book. “He thought my growth had stopped because I was a child celebrity, and he was mostly right.”

Despite all the highs and lows, the couple, who had a child in 1989, will celebrate their 37th wedding anniversary on March 16th.

“I know there’s one reason Michael and I were able to stick together through all the heavy-duty ups and downs,” McCormick continued. “That reason is our faith.” We both felt that our love was sincere, powerful, enduring, and worthy of being treasured despite all of our problems. Our faith gave us the impression that our love was sincere.
