A wild river had split the small town where the couple had resided for many years. It had once been crossed by an ancient bridge, but it had long since deteriorated. Nevertheless, it was occasionally used as a shortcut.
The man and the woman made the decision to move on that day. The rotten timbers moaned menacingly, and the boards squeaked beneath their feet. The river raged beneath them; even skilled swimmers may easily perish in the powerful torrent.
There was a loud crack when the couple got to the middle of the bridge. Directly beneath their feet, the planks started to break. The woman shrieked, stumbled, and nearly fell, but the man grabbed her just in time. He did everything he could to hold her, but the bridge was falling apart too quickly. They were both swept into the deep river a short while later.
Their chests were struck by the freezing water. They found themselves in a whirlpool. The powerful waves repeatedly engulfed the woman as she begged for oxygen. In spite of his desperation, the man held her hand tightly. He swam with one arm while holding his wife firmly with the other to keep them both afloat.
He was able to seize a thin branch that was protruding from the water at one point. In order to keep his wife afloat, he drew her closer. They shouted and called for assistance as they battled the river for several excruciating minutes. However, nobody was in the area.
The man suddenly became aware of movement behind him. He froze as he turned. A massive elephant was approaching them directly. It appeared to want to hurt them, and its dark figure loomed above the water. They were certain it was the end until the woman let out a terrified scream.
However, something surprising occurred when the elephant eventually arrived at them.
The elephant did something amazing instead of attacking. It extended its strong trunk in their direction. The man was initially astounded by what he saw, but he soon recognized that the animal was attempting to assist.
The elephant cautiously raised his wife and then him, placing them both on its back, after he shoved her closer.
The couple sat there, chilly and shaky with terror, yet alive. With its enormous body slicing through the turbulent seas, the elephant strode toward the shore. It started to feel to them like a saving island with every stride.
The man and woman leaped to the ground as soon as they arrived at dry land. They were alive but shocked and completely saturated.
As if nothing had happened, the elephant remained motionless for a few seconds, gazed at them with its enormous, sage eyes, then turned and strode into the thick jungle.
Unable to comprehend what they had just gone through, the pair simply stood there.
